City Ride 5 - Sydney Park to Zetland via Waterloo Metro
I quite like this journey. It isn’t a super direct ride, but it teaches you a few things about how cycling works in the Alexandria and Waterloo area, finding the permeable edges of the suburbs where cars get stuck but bikes fly through.
The ride starts at Sydney Park. It’s worth taking a moment here to head up the hill and check out the view of the airport, or just use the paths to get your legs moving. From there, you drop down into the backstreets of Alexandria and cut over to Belmont Street.
Belmont St is the real highlight of this route. It features these wonderful closed-off sections that act as barriers for cars but open doors for us. These dead-ends have been turned into lovely little pocket parks—quiet, green sanctuaries hidden right in the middle of the grid that you can ride right through.
A little lane eventually takes you across to Buckland Street, where the vibe changes. It’s a bit busier here as you roll past the massive construction site of the new Waterloo Station. It’s impressive and imposing, a reminder of how much the area is changing. Finally, you hit George Street, take a right, and follow the shared path. From there, it’s just a smooth coast all the way into Zetland.
