Distance: Approx 4.5km

Difficulty: Easy/Medium (Some shared paths, back lanes, and one tricky station crossing)

The Gist

This trail is the standard goto across the Redfern area. It’s a journey of contrasts: you start in the wide-open greens of Moore Park, glide over the roaring South Dowling Street traffic, and weave through the historic terraces of Redfern, pass the large blocks of government housing before hitting the high-tech retro finish of South Eveleigh.

The Ride

1. The Park Start (Federation Way to South Dowling)

We begin at Federation Way, the gateway between Centennial Park and Moore Park. It’s a grand start, but stay alert—the crossing at Anzac Parade is sloooow. Use the lights, take a breath, and once you’re across, you’re rewarded with the Moore Park Shared Path. It’s a gentle roll with plenty of space, letting you find your rhythm before the urban sections begin.

2. The Reschs Overpass

As you approach the edge of Moore Park, you’ll hit the pedestrian/cycle overpass. Look to your right as you cross South Dowling Street—you get a front-row view of the iconic Reschs Building. Once the heart of the Reschs Brewery (which quenched Sydney’s thirst for over a century), the building’s red-brick industrial facade is a local landmark. The overpass safely spits you out away from the highway chaos, past a small dogpark and into the quiet backstreets of East Redfern. (See intro picture)

3. Redfern Village (Bourke St to Redfern Park)

A brief stint on the Bourke Street cycleway (Sydney’s cycling “superhighway”) leads you to a quick turn into Telopea Street. From here, the vibe shifts to classic Sydney terrace life.

Follow Redfern Street as it veers into the magnificent Redfern Park. This is holy ground for some rugby league fans—the spiritual home of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. A terrific open facility where you can watch the junior leagues training

Heading to Redfern Park

The First Recorded Race (1869): The first competitive cycling event in Sydney is generally cited as taking place on January 26, 1869, at the Albert Ground in Redfern (near where the current Redfern Oval is located).

4. The Station Shuffle (Turner St to Gibbons St)

After exiting the park, head down Turner Street. This leads you toward the hustle of the station district. Cross over to the Gibbons Street Reserve, where you’ll see the shiny new southern entrance to Redfern Station.

Pro Tip: This area is busy. With the new station concourse and high pedestrian traffic, it’s best to take it easy. If the footpaths are crowded, don’t be afraid to hop off and walk your bike. Note. A lot of riders go straight down Redfern for faster speeds.

5. South Eveleigh & The Locomotive Workshops

Once past the station, the route opens up beautifully. You’re now entering South Eveleigh (formerly the Australian Technology Park). You’ll pass the Atomic Beer Project (the Brewery) on your left—a great spot for a post-ride pint later.

This section is a highlight. You’re riding through the shadows of the old Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops. Built in the 1880s, these were once the largest railway workshops in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, they house tech giants and cafes, but the industrial bones of the city are still very much on display.

6. The Henderson Finish

From the tech park, it’s a straight shot down Henderson Road. This is a dedicated, separated cycleway that feels safe and fast. Follow it all the way as it carries you directly to Erskineville Station.

You’ve officially made it from the East to the Inner West without having to battle a single semi-trailer.

Why we love it

It’s a “great trail to know” because it stitches together different parts of the city using back lanes and dedicated paths you’d never find in a car. It’s a shortcut that feels like a scenic tour.

Where to stop

  • Redfern Park: For a quick water break under the figs. Cafes nearby, check Google Maps.

  • South Eveleigh: Grab a coffee at Lucky Pickle or a beer at Atomic. 📷Photos

  • Erskineville Village: You’re spoiled for choice with pubs like The Rose or The Erko just a minute from the finish line.
